Knee Pain

The knee joint is a hinge joint made up of the femur (thigh bone), the tibia (the shin bone) and the patella (knee cap). Ligaments around the knee allow for increased stability as during rotational movements. The meniscus (cartilage in the knee joint) acts as shock absorber. The knee is influenced significantly by the action the hip and ankle joints.

Common causes of knee pain include:

  • Patellofemoral pain
  • ITB friction syndrome
  • Patella dislocation
  • Osgood-Schlatter syndrome
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Fat pad impingement
  • Acute ACL/PCL or meniscal damage

If your knee is clicking, locking or giving way it may be an indicator of a more serious pathology. Early assessment and treatment of knee pain has been shown to correlate with better long term outcomes.
